During the Cold War, the USSR captured US pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down a U-2 reconnaissance plane. Powers’ only hope, sentenced to 10 years in prison, is New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), hired by a CIA agent to negotiate his release. Donovan flew to Berlin to free the youth by exchanging prisoners of war. If all goes well, the Russians will have a convicted spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), which Donovan defended in court.
